Choose the right spot

Number of opponents you are facing, the type of opponents, and size of the pot and position of your hand are few factors which can influence the bluffing decision. When going to bluff it is important for the player to choose the right spot. A player’s table image also plays a very important part. The image that he has and the way he is perceived by his opponents is very crucial here. A person with a tight image has more chances of succeeding. If there are more than three players in the game then it is very risky to bluff. Player should also know his opponents well before he decides to bluff. Some players are easily bluffed and there are others who never fold. Many beginners who are only bothered about their own hand and do not think about what others could be holding, could be very dangerous for the game. It is advisable not to bluff against such players as it would be a waste of time. That is why it is said that to bluff against a pro, an experienced poker player is still easy but novices or bad players are immune to bluffing and will lead to nothing.  If   player bluffs very frequently the opponents will call or re-raise. There should be a good balance of how often to bluff. You should not be too predictable in any way whether you bluff very frequently or never bluff at all. This can affect the player’s image also. While it is true that bluff, if successfully implemented with a large pot size, can bring huge gains for the player; it is more difficult to bluff when the pot size is big as there would be many players contending for it and they would not easily fold up. Slow playing is another deception technique which is the opposite of bluffing. It is also called sandbagging or trapping. A slow player bets weakly even when he has a strong hand. The trick lies in knowing when to slow play his hand. It is mostly used by players sitting in the ‘early’ positions.  It is often used against aggressive players. The purpose of slow play is to let the competition build a hand that will be good. Once that will happen, the player can start firing and bet more strongly.
